Ever since it was announced that a live-action Legend of Zelda film was in the works from Nintendo and Sony Pictures, a whole host of big-name stars have been linked to the titular role.

Hunter Schafer, Freya Allan and Elle Fanning were among those mentioned as possibilities to play the princess in director Wes Ball's adaptation, but in the end the part has gone to a rather less well-known actress: Bo Bragason.

The 21-year-old's casting was announced by Nintendo in mid-July 2025 – just under two years before the currently scheduled release – with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth revealed as the film's Link at the same time.

Not too many further details have been revealed at this stage, including which of the games the film will take inspiration from, but we do know that production will be supervised by Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto – so we imagine we'll be looking at a fairly faithful adaptation.

Who is Bo Bragason?

Bragason is a young British actor who has been cast in the role of Princess Zelda in the upcoming film adaptation of Nintendo's hugely popular Legend of Zelda video games.

The film is set to be released in 2027 and will be helmed by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball, with exact plot details being kept very much under wraps for now.

She will be the very first actress to play the iconic character on the big screen – almost four decades after she was first created back in 1986.

Bragason might not yet be a household name, but despite her young age she's already wracked up an impressive list of credits on both the big – and especially small – screens.

Her breakthrough role came in 2017, when she starred in the harrowing BBC One drama Three Girls, while she's more recently had key roles in both Sally Wainwright's Disney Plus adventure series Renegade Nell and the Jenna Coleman-starring BBC One crime drama The Jetty.

Meanwhile, she'll be back on TV very soon with a role in the historical drama series King and Conquerer, which also stars James Norton, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Emily Beecham.

When it comes to films, she's had a role in the acclaimed indie-horror Censor, and the 2024 comedy-horror The Radleys – but it's safe to see Zelda will be her biggest role yet by quite some distance.

How old is Bo Bragason?

At the time of writing, Bragason is 21-years-old, having been born in 2004.

Is Bo Bragason on Instagram?

Yes, Bo Bragason is on Instagram.

You can find her on the handle bobragason – where she currently has 18.8k followers. We'd expect that number to increase dramatically in the near future following news of her casting!

What has Bo Bragason said about The Legend of Zelda?

So far, Bragason hasn't publicly commented on her casting – although she did share a story to her Instagram page that included a screen grab of Variety's article confirming her casting.

We'll be keeping an eye out for any further statements from the star, so keep checking back for the latest news!
