The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

There's something of a Downton Abbey reunion in this adaptation of Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows' novel about a young author who finds herself fascinated by a curious little society on the island of Guernsey.

Lily James (aka Downton's Lady Rose) leads the cast (which includes Matthew Goode, Jessica Brown Findlay and Penelope Wilton) as author Juliet Ashton who is struggling with writer's block when she receives a letter out of the blue in 1946. Dawsey Adams (played by Game of Thrones' actor Michiel Huisman) of Guernsey has come across a book that once belonged to her and it's not long before they become pen pals.

She learns that he's a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and soon begins hearing from others involved in the organisation, who share their fascinating tales of life in Guernsey under the German Occupation.

Ok, ok, it's not actually Frankenstein, but upcoming movie Mary Shelley tells the tale of the love affair between poet Percy Shelley (Douglas Booth) and the then 18-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Elle Fanning). The pair caused quite the scandal (Shelley was already married), especially after Mary fell pregnant. Their daughter died just a few weeks after being born, but Mary carried on and put her heart into her writing, eventually producing her most famous novel, Frankenstein.

If you want to know more about Mary (and her mother, also named Mary) then you might be best giving Charlotte Godwin's Romantic Outlaws a go. Oh and keep an eye out for Maisie Williams, Bel Powley and Joanne Froggatt in the movie biopic coming this summer.
