Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Michiel Huisman stars as a man who causes an international incident when he drives across Ireland, transporting the body of a man he barely knew. A hard-to-swallow series of events sets this journey in motion and, once our hero and his gang get on the road, it's not difficult to predict their destination. Old family secrets are revealed, rifts addressed, and lessons learned, as Huisman discovers what's really important in life. The script's humour keeps the story bouncing along, while the pleasant soundtrack sets the whimsical tone - just the sight of a car driving with a budgie-adorned coffin on the roof may be enough to elicit a chuckle. Cliché-riddled as the film may be, it takes a hard heart not to be drawn in by its earnest messages about love. So while the sentiment behind The Last Right is identical to a thousand road movies that came before it, the warm performances make the familiarity forgivable.
