Facing up to the grief of losing his wife proves difficult for a middle-aged grandfather in this gnarly Icelandic tale of rage and regeneration. Ingvar Eggert Sigurdsson is a remarkably imposing presence in the central role. A surly, taciturn type, he reacts to his bereavement - the result of a fogbound car accident on a local road - by throwing himself into a house construction project. Until, that is, he uncovers a distressing secret about his late spouse, and his emotions boil out of control. The rugged surrounding landscapes lend an elemental quality to the escalating drama, which is staged in some remarkable single-take scenes, notably when Sigurdsson loses it during a home-computer video call. Yet, for all the white-knuckle intensity, there's still an abiding sense of a fierce but necessary healing process in progress, and the hope of redemption in the midst of the carnage keeps us compelled. A bracing, yet ultimately humane accomplishment, A White, White Day marks writer/director Hlynur Palmason as a name to watch.
