Sylvester Stallone's gung-ho Vietnam veteran creaks ever closer to his twilight years in an action thriller that lacks both action and thrills. The tranquility of John Rambo's civilian life on an Arizona ranch is shattered when he must cross the border into Mexico to rescue the granddaughter of an old friend, who's been kidnapped by a drugs cartel. A flimsy plot held together by right-wing propaganda and thinly veiled racism means this fifth and supposedly final film in the franchise is instantly forgettable, and at 73 years of age Stallone looks too tired and disengaged to play the take-no-prisoners one-man army with any conviction. Indeed, the majority of the mercifully short running time is spent setting up a bloodthirsty climax that fails to deliver on almost every level, leaving audiences as jaded as the hero himself.
