Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel cuts a very different figure on-screen here as Jay, a man who travels to Pakistan to kidnap bride-to-be Samira (Radhika Apte). As the details of his plan change, so does Jay's relationship with his captive. The film starts off promisingly as a barebones action thriller, with Patel transforming himself into a mysterious figure with an air of genuine danger about him. Once the abduction happens, however, the promise is lost, as the pace slows to a crawl and we are placed inside the minds of the characters, Samira's in particular - Apte gives an excellent performance as she reveals a different take on the stereotypical hostage role. Sadly, a lack of any urgency means this revelation doesn't increase the stakes, and the film takes an awkward turn into film noir territory. Director Michael Winterbottom seems to be too interested in psychology to be able to deliver an effective action thriller. However, great leads and an air of mystery hold your attention until the bitter end.
