Backtrace

This heist-gone-wrong movie may start with a bullet-strewn bang, but the action swiftly fizzles into a meandering tale about cops tracking the robbers who are eager to extract the location of hidden millions from a thief who has lost his memory (Matthew Modine). Sylvester Stallone barely goes through any motions at all as the dour detective with a permanent look of dyspepsia - a bad haircut on loan from Steven Seagal can do that. Thrillers involving amnesiac protagonists have proved intriguing diversions in the past (Payback, Cypher, The Bourne Identity), but this drab example is merely forgettable.
