Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Sam Worthington may have been the star of box-office champ Avatar, the best thing about Terminator: Salvation and a rugged presence in dramas like The Debt and Hacksaw Ridge, but the Aussie actor is yet to crack Hollywood's A-list. This killer-with-a-conscience action yarn probably won't change that, though director Jonathan Mostow (best known for edgy 1997 thriller Breakdown and the third Terminator film) delivers plenty of slick gunplay and crunching combat. Leon and Jason Bourne are part of the movie's DNA, as Worthington's junkie assassin Lucas drags his teenage target (Odeya Rush) across Europe with a passel of hitmen in hot pursuit. Line of Duty's Martin Compston trades in his police warrant card for a silencer and a sadistic streak as Lucas's nemesis and Downton Abbey's Allen Leech is eminently hissable as the corporate slimeball behind the mayhem. It all feels vaguely sub-Bourne but a fierce finale in the bowels of an English country house and Worthington's surprisingly nuanced performance as the troubled torpedo make this above average fare.
