Final Recall

Five teenagers at a remote lakeside cabin in the woods find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time in this sci-fi horror mash-up. However, this time it's not some hillbilly killer cannibal on the rampage but a global alien invasion that shatters their rural idyll. War of the Worlds, Predator, The Matrix, Skyline and even alien-abduction potboiler Communion are among the movies excavated by illustrator-turned-director Mauro Borrelli, as mopey Jedidiah Goodacre and happy snapper RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad) battle to keep their friends from extraterrestrial extraction. Could crazy survivalist Wesley Snipes, holed up nearby in a hand-me-down hovel straight out of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, be there to help or to hinder? The action star (who also co-produces) has a ball as the scenery-chewing oddball who seems to know what's really going on. But despite the verdant Canadian locations and passable special effects, this meandering mosaic of well-worn genre clichés cannot get off the ground.
