Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

On a lawless Dublin housing estate, a group of unemployed pals scheme their way to a better life via the expedient route of drug dealing in this Irish crime drama. Originality is hardly in the movie's favour, as this cautionary tale treads a well-worn path, but it does offer a reasonably authentic picture of the scrag end of the Irish capital, replete with much colourful dialogue, an Irish rap soundtrack (!), and generally vivid performances. The standout is burly lead John Connors (who co-wrote the script with director Mark O'Connor), whose charismatic presence draws sympathy for a young man whose good intentions are soon side-tracked into numerous bad decisions. Almost as striking is Kierston Wareing, the restless wife of a feared local drugs baron and the story's toxic blonde. A box-office success on home ground, it manages the trick of respecting the aspirations of those left behind by the Celtic Tiger economy while handing out a few tough lessons on the cost of responsibility.
