Review

A star rating of 1 out of 5.

Do you prefer films that take a relatively conventional approach to story and structure? If so, you might want to avoid Song to Song. Directed by Terrence Malick, a film-making enigma whose films can divide an audience (The Tree of Life, Knight of Cups), this is an impressionistic drama that plays out as an endless succession of fragmented, dream-like moments, many of which are accompanied by philosophical voiceovers. Sadly, the result is monotonous, shapeless and impenetrable. After watching the film, you'd be forgiven if you couldn't describe the plot, which concerns the romantic collisions between two musicians (Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling), a music producer (Michael Fassbender), and a waitress (Natalie Portman). Admittedly, the whole thing is beautifully shot, and it is peppered with sequences that feel spontaneous and authentic. The problem, though, is that most of the film is tedious and uninvolving. Song to Song might be nice to look at, but it is a chore to sit through.
