Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

If you can't remember the last film about paper-aeroplane throwing, there's novelty value at least to this feel-good Australian family drama with a whiff of magical realism about it. It also happens to be heart-warming and hugely likeable. Ed Oxenbould, who was memorable as the creeped-out grandkid in M Night Shyamalan's chiller The Visit, plays an outback lad who's a whiz at folding and flying paper planes. But his plans to enter regional heats for the World Paper Plane Throwing Competition look like being scuppered by grieving dad Sam Worthington, who's been barely functional since the death five months earlier of his wife. No prizes for guessing that paper planes ultimately play a key role in renewed father/son bonding. It's all as corny as Kellogg's, but it's worth catching if you and the kids are in the mood for some pleasant Oz escapism.
