Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Owen Wister's bestseller The Virginian: a Horseman of the Plains was praised on its publication in 1902 for its accurate depiction of the Old West, and it would provide the inspiration for various screen adaptations, including a long-running 1960s TV series. Country music star Trace Adkins is the charismatic, gravel-voiced lead in this faithful retelling, which details the Virginian's run-ins with his nemesis Trampas (Steve Bacic), his spiky relationship with father figure Judge Henry (Ron Perlman) and his wooing of feisty schoolmarm Molly West (Victoria Pratt). Director Thomas Makowski gets off to a pacey start before he and the cast get bogged down by Bob Thielke's screenplay, which would be more exciting if less in thrall to the authenticity of the original novel.
