Our Score
Fans of Peter Jackson's cult schlockfests Bad Taste and Braindead or Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy will be in gore nirvana with this Kiwi splatstick horror. Milo Cawthorne and James Blake star as hacked-off heavy metal head-bangers Brodie and Zakk, who form a band DEATHGASM ("lower case is for pussies!"), but unwittingly perform a devilish ditty that turns everyone in the vicinity into drooling demons. First-time director Jason Lei Howden worked on special effects in blockbuster fare like The Avengers and The Hobbit trilogy, so he skilfully hurls in plenty of splatter and viscera as drills and chainsaws cut a swathe through the band's fiendish foes. But his feature debut is also bawdily humorous and gleefully tongue in cheek - marvel as our heroes tackle Brodie's possessed foster parents with a dildo and other sex toys, or when one unfortunate bad guy gets re-decapitated. Kimberley Crossman shows her mettle, too, as the good girl-turned-axe wielding Fury who's in a love triangle with Brodie and Zakk. Deathgasm may not be seriously scary, but it is demonically good fun.
