Our Score
This is tosh, and don't think producer Ross Hunter didn't know it. After all, he'd managed to corner a very specific market and achieved notable success with glossy, daft movies like Magnificent Obsession with Rock Hudson and Imitation of Life with Lana Turner. Here, Turner also stars, in a film with a plot so full of holes that it's hard to stop the cast falling through them. But Hunter was shrewd enough to know that if it looked good and was cleverly cast you could get away with murder (almost). Trouble is, this drama really needed Joan Crawford to make it work; Turner is too genteel for the hysterics. Despite support from the likes of Lloyd Nolan, Sandra Dee and Anna May Wong, director Michael Gordon has a tough time pulling all the threads together.
