Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Irish designer, architect and feminist icon Eileen Gray is a fascinating character, ill-served by this precious biopic from writer/director Mary McGuckian. Presuming considerable knowledge, she plunges into the art world of 1920s Paris as Gray (Orla Brady) falls for Romanian architect and critic Jean Badovici under the jaundiced gaze of architectural titan Le Corbusier (Vincent Perez). But rather than exploring the ideas and emotions of a real woman, McGuckian tastefully arranges her louche caricatures around elegant interiors and has them spout pithy epigrams about life, love and art. Shot in soft-focus profile, Brady stares into space looking wistful or peevish, while Perez delivers acidic asides to camera - struggling to accept that Gray has disregarded his sacred Five Points of Architecture in designing the first-ever modernist house in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. There is evocative use of the Côte d'Azur locations, but key episodes like the Nazi occupation and the fate of the villa (and its feuding claimants) feel rushed and inconsequential.
