Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant – they’re kind of a double act, aren’t they? They’re not your typical TV faces, but they’re good at being themselves and making fun of each other.
Do you get scared going on stage alone?
Yes, walking out onto a stage can feel lonely and daunting, but once I’m out there I’m not on my own any more, I have the audience. My manager, Dan, is also ever-present.
How long have you been working together?
For the past 15 years. I can go to him with the most insane idea and unlike most people he doesn’t look at me with a blank face. I don’t think he’s ever said no to me – oh actually, when we went to Austria to film at a snowboarding festival, I wasn’t allowed to snowboard because he was scared I’d break a leg.
Who should win RT’s Audience Award?
I would love Educating Yorkshire to win because I’m a Yorkshireman. My school years weren’t great, so I could relate to Musharaf. I got beaten up quite a lot. It made me want to strive to prove all those people wrong. Success is the best form of revenge.
British Academy Television Awards are on Sunday 18 May at 8:00pm on BBC1.
