Fans eagerly awaiting Barbara Windsor’s return to EastEnders this evening have been issued a warning by show bosses: “do not move from your TV screen until the very end credits have finished as there will be a special scene at the episode”.

Windsor will be back on screens from 8pm tonight for a one-off appearance in which Peggy returns to Walford when she learns that Phil (Steve McFadden) needs his mother’s help at the hospital where he’s currently recuperating from his recent car smash.  In true Mitchell fashion, Peggy puts family first and goes back to the place she called home for 16 years.

On the topic of her reappearance in Albert Square, Windsor recently commented: “Well, I can’t say too much but do make sure you stay tuned until the very end of the credits as there is something a little bit special. It’s very fitting for Peggy and something we all wanted to do. It gives a nod to Peggy and her time on the Square.”

This isn’t the first time that EastEnders has added an extra scene to its landmark episodes: following the funeral of Pat Evans (Pam St Clement) in 2012, Nick Berry made a surprise return following the credits as Simon Wicks in order to lay a floral tribute on the grave of his screen mum.
