This article contains reference to domestic abuse and coercive control that some readers may find upsetting.

Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) was left trapped once more with abusive new husband Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) in Coronation Street (30 March), despite efforts from George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) to save him.

Having shared suspicions of Theo's behaviour with Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) and Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), George was worried sick for Todd, who he thinks of as a son.

Sarah told Theo's boss, Gary Windass (Mikey North) of the many examples that pointed to domestic abuse, and Gary witnessed first hand how scared Todd had become, before telling Theo he was watching him.

At the builder's yard, Gary handed Theo all his tools and sacked him. When Theo loudly protested, Gary warned him that he was coming for him, while George visited Todd alone at the flat.

Handing Todd a packed bag, George explained this had everything he would need for a quick escape and tenderly vowed to look after Todd.

But as Theo messaged that he was on his way home, a panicked Todd ushered George away - but not before George hid the bag out of sight.

As Theo questioned Todd on what George was doing there, Todd dismissed George as interfering and quickly moved the subject on to their move to Belfast, hoping to keep Theo in a good mood.

At the corner shop, George noted how quiet things sounded at the upstairs flat where he knew Todd was suffering. Will Todd reach out for help?

Coronation Street has been working with Galop on the portrayal of abuse within an LGBTQ+ relationship, and with Stonewall on the depiction of trauma as a result of conversion therapy.
