After the success of Martha Wells's Murderbot novels, Alexander Skarsgård has brought the conflicted character to life in the new Apple TV+ adaptation, with the final episode now available.

It's been a roller coaster journey for Murderbot. The early episodes saw him gain free will, only to use it to binge soap operas - before getting picked up by a team of do-gooders in the form of PreservationAux.

From there, it was a mission to protect his team - while also avoiding human emotions as best he could.

Thankfully, following the season finale, Murderbot has now been renewed for season 2, confirming we'll see SecUnit back in action.

Here's everything we know so far.

Murderbot season 2 release date speculation

There isn't a confirmed release date for Murderbot season 2 just yet. At a guess, wouldn't expect it sooner than late 2026, but we'll keep this page updated with further details when they emerge.

Murderbot was renewed for season 2 immediately following the release of the season 1 finale.

The Weitz brothers, showrunners of Murderbot, said in a statement: "We’re so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’s world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team."

Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+ added: "Chris, Paul, Alexander and the entire Murderbot team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere.

"We can’t wait to unveil what’s next for Murderbot and, of course, Sanctuary Moon in season 2."

What could the plot of Murderbot season 2 be?

We'd expect the plot of Murderbot season 2 to follow the events of Wells's second novel in the Murderbot series, Artificial Condition.

It sees SecUnit attempt to find out more about the circumstances that led to it going rogue and, with the help of ART, an artificial intelligence, attempts to pose as an augmented human to go unnoticed in RaviHyral, the station where the incident occurred.

Who could star in Murderbot season 2?

Of course, we'd expect Alexander Skarsgård to return as Murderbot. We'd also expect new cast members, including actors to play ART, as well as new characters Tapan and Tlacey.

While PresAux don't have a major role in Artificial Condition, we could potentially expect the following to make brief appearances:

  • Noma Dumezweni as Mensah
  • David Dastmalchian as Gurathin
  • Sabrina Wu as Pin-Lee
  • Akshay Khanna as Ratthi
  • Tattiawna Jones as Arada
  • Tamara Podemski as Bharadwaj
