The series, which has just released its 10th and final episode, will be back to further chart the story of Alexander Skarsgård's title character, a security robot hiding the fact he has gained free will.

Showrunners Chris and Paul Weitz, who adapted the book by Martha Wells, said in a statement: "We’re so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’s world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team."

Meanwhile, Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, added: "Chris, Paul, Alexander and the entire Murderbot team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere.

"We can’t wait to unveil what’s next for Murderbot and, of course, Sanctuary Moon in season 2."

Of course, there are plenty more stories from Wells's Murderbot Diaries for the series to adapt. The first season was based on her first novella, All Systems Red, and Skarsgård previously explained how the team approached the adaptation.

He said of the changes that had to be made: "I think what we did was more on a character level, probably an inter-relational level between the characters. We also... for some reason, the group of humans that Murderbot is assigned to protect is slightly smaller.

"We combined a couple of characters, made two into one, because we felt that it was easier to kind of build relationships with these humans if there aren't quite as many of them.

"But other than that, I think it's quite faithful to Martha Wells's novella, and we try to stay very faithful to the tone of Murderbot, as well as the character that I'm playing."
