5. Heaven Sent (2015)

Trapped in a world unlike any other he has seen, the Doctor faces the greatest challenge of his many lives; pursued by the fearsome creature known only as the Veil, he must attempt the impossible. If he makes it through, Gallifrey is waiting.

"It may not be the scariest in terms of monsters and 'Gotcha' moments, but the fact that he's stalked and emotionally tortured for billions of years is terrifying," says Alyssa Zulueta. "Plus, we've got the tour de force performance by Peter Capaldi."

Jodi Bayer couldn't get enough of it: "The glimpses of the monster. The slow, never-ending stalking. The monster jumping out from the grave (or whatever 12 was digging). The skulls in the water. The Doctor being burned by the monster, then crawling through the castle and leaving trails of blood. The Doctor electrocuting himself and the major punch in the gut when you finally realised he was stuck in a loop for all those years. Those are the things that make it scary."

"Another vote for Heaven Sent here," says Rebecca Palmas. "Brilliant. Creepy. Sad. And it made my eleven-year-old daughter fall in love with the series."

"It's anguishing, torturing, claustrophobic and nearly hopeless," says Cinzia Gaviglio. "And that creature is so creepy!"
