Eric Bana, Sam Neill and Rosemarie DeWitt are just some of the names starring in Untamed, a six-part Netflix thriller that follows the investigation into the murder of a young woman in Yosemite National Park, a vast landscape that throws up challenges at every turn.

"In a lot of these parks, people visit about 3 per cent, 4 per cent of the actual land," said co-creator Elle Smith (The Marsh King's Daughter) via Tudum.

"You see the village and you see the main points, but you don't get into the back country and you don't really see the mass square footage of the place."

Yosemite is "the size of Rhode Island, and people only know such a tiny speck of it", added co-creator Mark L Smith (American Primeval, The Revenant).

"I love stripping all the cheats away, stripping all the more modern tools that people can use. I feel like it really gets down to the character and what they can find within themselves.”

But while the show is set in the Californian park, were the cast and crew actually based there?

Where was Netflix's Untamed filmed?

The show was actually filmed in Whistler, a town north of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Locations include:

  • North Shore Studios
  • Chip Kerr Park in Port Moody, which was also used for Shōgun
  • Mount Seymour, which doubles as the mighty El Capitan
  • Grace Lake, which doubles for Grouse Lake

But aerial shots of Yosemite were used to give the impression that the action was unfolding there.

"This was a tough landscape that we were shooting in," Smith told The LA Times, while Bana said that "going to work in a studio after doing something like this – the thought of it is just debilitating creatively".

"There's something about a camera coming out of a box when the sun rises and going back when the sun goes down," he said. "There’s an energy, there’s a cadence to that."

Bana also said that he hopes "people enjoy the feeling of being in that space, and in a perfect world, feel motivated to go and seek them out" – even in light of some of the thriller's hairier moments.
