Steam has a new highest-rated video game of all time, overtaking Portal 2
Well deserved.

There's a new king in town, as Steam's longtime highest-rated game ever has just been dethroned.
You could spend hours listing all the incredible games that have graced Valve's flagship storefront since its launch in 2003. Half-Life, The Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate 3 – the list goes on.
But for many years, the undisputed king of the platform has been Valve's own Portal 2, with the puzzle masterpiece topping Steam250's list of Steam's top-rated games.
All good things must come to an end however, and Portal 2 has had to cede the crown to a new top dog, and it's hard to say it doesn't deserve it.
As of 9th July 2025, faming sim Stardew Valley has officially become the highest-rated game on Steam250, racking up a score of 8.87, narrowly overtaking Portal 2's 8.85.

First released back in 2016, the farm life simulation from solo developer Eric Barone, perhaps better known as ConcernedApe, has gone on to become one of the most successful indie games of all time.
Subsequent major updates adding swathes of new content and even multiplayer functionality have served to cement the game's reputation, racking up a 98 per cent positive rating on the store from more than 770 thousand reviews.
In comparison, Portal 2 also has a 98 per cent positive rating, but from a much lower 363 thousand reviews.
Progressing further down the list reads like a Who's Who of some of the biggest names in PC gaming history, with Terraria in third place, and the likes of Left 4 Dead 2, Vampire Survivors, Hades and Portal 1 all featuring in the top 10.
It should be noted that the way Steam250 calculates scores differs from Steam itself, which still lists ranks Portal 2 above Stardew Valley.

Steam250 uses an algorithm that assigns a score based on the number of votes and approval ratings, hence how Stardew Valley has managed to overtake Portal by virtue of the sheer disparity in the number of reviews.
For that reason, we could one day see Terraria shoot to the top of the rankings, with the game currently sitting on 97 per cent positive ratings from an astounding 1.4 million reviews.
While Stardew Valley continues to prove incredibly popular, with its concurrent player count peaking at around 150 thousand players every day, last year's Stardew Valley 1.6.9 update marked the end of official support for the game.
With Barone believing the game to now be complete, he has moved on to focus his attentions on his next project, Haunted Chocolatier.
But while official support for the game has come to an end, the prevalence of mods is sure to keep the game's impassioned fanbase satisfied for years to come.
