When looking back at the Resident Evil films of the past, it can be hard to be enthused for future instalments, but going by trailer reactions at CinemaCon and the talent behind it, we might actually be looking forward to the Resident Evil movie now, which has just had its release date confirmed.

We’re not the only ones, as Leon Kennedy actor Nick Apostolides is “cautiously optimistic” for the upcoming zombie-romp from Weapons director Zach Cregger.

To mark the release date confirmation, there is now a Resident Evil movie website, but there is not much to go on, other than a logo, the release date and that Resident Evil will be showing in IMAX.

Certainly, there is a lot of hype surrounding the franchise at the moment, as Resident Evil Requiem has sold over 7 million copies since it launched, with director Koshi Nakanishi posting an image to his story with Requiem-themed cakes.

Developers Capcom aren’t done with Requiem, either, as we have an upcoming DLC to look forward to, which will feature extra story content.

An update in March also added a photo mode, and another upcoming update is to add a new combat-focused mini-game, but it’s not entirely clear if this is going to be a Mercenaries mode, which has been included in Resident Evil games for decades at this point.

But as for when we can see Cregger’s vision come to life? The Resident Evil movie will release in cinemas on 18 September 2026.

No one is quite sure what the plot of the film is – there are certainly lots of Resident Evil games to drawn upon for inspiration – but what’s for sure is that seeing T-Virus monsters in IMAX will probably be quite the unsettling experience.

But, September is still some months away, so be sure to check out all the upcoming video game releases in 2026 and beyond to find something to pass the time with!
