After an out-of-this-world box office showing, Project Hail Mary is set for its own gaming adaptation.

Adapted from Andy Weir's 2021 book of the same name, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as the reluctant engineer-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace who is sent on a suicide mission to find out what's causing the sun to dim.

The film has been one of the biggest cinema successes of 2026 so far, grossing $425 million at the worldwide box office (at the time of writing).

And perhaps thanks to this success, Amazon MGM and developer Maze Theory have confirmed that the story will be branching out into the gaming world, with an adaptation to be developed in collaboration with Weir.

Unfortunately, there is a catch for many of us.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars will be a "mixed reality game" from Maze Theory, the studio behind Thief VR: Legacy of the Shadow and Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom.

The game will take place during a "pivotal, untold moment in the Hail Mary mission," placing players in Grace's shoes and tasking them with diagnosing and fixing an issue on board the spacecraft, "pushing the limits of science and engineering."

Now, there's probably only one question that anyone has on their minds when it comes to this game, and those fans will be delighted to hear that Grace's alien partner Rocky will make an appearance, and players will be able to build their relationship across the game's story.

On the jump to gaming, Weir said that, "Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more. This is the first step outside what happens in the book and movie, something you can only experience in mixed reality."

As for who will have the distinct honour of taking over from Ryan Gosling in the role of Grace, we are yet to find out.

I may not have a VR headset of my own right now, but if anything is going to convince me to buy one, it's Rocky.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars releases in 2026 across major mixed reality and VR platforms.
