Making nearly $400 million from its $35 million budget, the movie also received a mass of positive reviews and became an instant favourite for lovers of psychological thrillers.

It tracks that in early 2026, just a few months after the film's release, it was announced that the chiller would be getting a sequel. And now, some more details have finally been revealed – including Sweeney's new co-star.

The Housemaid's Secret – which bears the same title as the second novel in Freida McFadden's series which it's based on – will see Sydney Sweeney return to the role of Millie Calloway, the titular housemaid.

Rebecca Sonnenshine and Paul Feig, writer and director of the 2025 film respectively, will also be returning in their roles for the second movie.

And now, Deadline has reported that joining Sweeney will be none other than Academy Award nominee Kirsten Dunst, who most recently appeared alongside Channing Tatum in 2025's Roofman.

In announcing the news, Lionsgate president Erin Westerman said: "It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid’s next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon". She added that "she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems.”

Dunst was recently confirmed by Deadline to be appearing in the upcoming Minecraft Movie sequel, so the next few months are set to be a busy time for the critically acclaimed star.

No release date for The Housemaid's Secret has been given yet, and as its leads are both in high demand it may be a while before more details are confirmed. However, given the success of the first movie, Lionsgate are probably aiming to start shooting the sequel as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Seyfried recently revealed that she may also briefly return for the sequel even though her fan favourite character Nina does not make an appearance in the second novel.

"I mean, here’s the thing, it would be – they’re finding a way," the Testament of Ann Lee star told Hits Radio UK. "Because it’s only going to be like a little thing, I think, I imagine.

"I mean, it could be more, but I think the fans of the movie will understand if I end up being in it, why. And they will appreciate it!"
