2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the second-highest-grossing film of that year, making over $1.3 billion worldwide, putting it just behind the global sensation that was Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig's Barbie.

The film quickly became the highest-grossing film based on a video game of all time, while Jack Black won a Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award for favourite villain and the movie was nominated for many more industry gongs.

Following sibling plumbers Mario and Luigi in their attempts to save Princess Peach and defeat the evil Bowser (remember 'Peaches, Peaches, Peaches-Peaches-Peaches'?), The Super Mario Bros. Movie took the core storyline of the iconic Nintendo games and turned it into a blockbuster. It's only natural that a sequel was in store.
