You can't get through an episode of Game of Thrones without a good few mentions of the throne or a royal bloodline. And it seems Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow in the hit HBO drama, faces the same problem away from the show...

The 27-year-old star has royal connections in real life, too. In fact, he's a descendant of Charles II, through his paternal grandmother Lavender Cecilia Denny.

But Harington is keen to clarify that having a regal ancestor does not – I repeat, not – make him posh.

"My parents didn’t have a lot of money when I was growing up. We were comfortable, but I didn’t go to Oxbridge, and yet every American interviewer I get says to me, 'You’re related to Charles II! Your grandfather was a baronet!'" he told The Evening Standard.

"It’s infuriating, because that is a part of my history, but you’re trying to turn me into a posh boy and I’m not. I’m adamant that I’m not. My mum’s always telling me, 'Tell those journalists that you went to state school.'"

Harington – who coincidentally starred in Posh on the West End a few years ago – reckons we are "obsessed" with people being posh.

"People are obsessed with this idea of poshness. This whole Cumberbatch, Hiddleston, Eddie Redmayne thing — they’re good actors and they deserve to be where they are, and not because they went to Eton," he said.

Harington stars in Pompeii, which is currently in UK cinemas

Game of Thrones continues on Mondays at 9:00pm on Sky Atlantic
