The fourth feature from Paul Hills (Boston Kickout) is a bold attempt to mix screwball comedy with mystical melodrama. Frank Capra attempted something similar with Lost Horizon in 1937, but Hills and his writer/star Jonnie Hurn fall a long way short with their rite-of-passage tale. Hurn plays a stressed London advertising man who is persuaded by bewitching French free spirit Julie Dray to ditch his addictive luxuries and risk a crucial work account in order to join her on an expedition to discover his true self in Brittany's mythical Brocéliande forest. The quest involves lots of sex, some magic mushrooms and an excess of fortune-cookie philosophising, but Hurn's script comes up with few real answers. This is certainly a handsome and ambitious work - an obvious labour of love for its makers - but it comes across as being overly florid and muddled.
