Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In suggesting that the problems of an ageing woman can be solved by the love of a good man, Blandine Lenoir's menopausal tale seems to contradict the message of empowerment it strives to promote. Fifty-year-old waitress Agnès Jaoui is contemplating the daunting triple whammy of being divorced, unemployed and a grandmother, but her daughters Sarah Suco and Lou Roy-Lecollinet are too wrapped up in their own worlds to detect their mother's malaise. But, while best friend Pascale Arbillot tries to be supportive, it's only when Jaoui bumps into old flame Thibault de Montalembert that she regains her pep. The scenario revisits themes explored in Lenoir's 2014 debut, Zouzou, and makes several shrewd points about class, gender and age. Yet, while Jaoui is typically willing and winning, this breezy dramedy sells her short with its cosily upbeat dénouement.
