The head of a high school reunion committee tries to get the most popular guy in school to attend their class' upcoming 20-year reunion.
This comedy has more edge than you might expect and stars Jack Black as Dan Landsman, an unpopular family man struggling to organise a high-school reunion. One night, Dan convinces himself that people will turn up if he can only secure the attendance of Oliver Lawless (James Marsden), a Hollywood actor who used to be the coolest guy at school. Contriving a bogus business trip to Los Angeles, he meets Oliver for a boozy, drug-fuelled night on the town, at which point the story takes a rather surprising narrative turn. Happily, there are several funny moments along the way, while Marsden is perfectly cast as the chiselled hunk who peaked before graduation. At times, the film is broader than it needs to be - Dan's boss (Jeffrey Tambor) doesn't know how to use Google - but there are enough other laughs to compensate. Just.
