Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Seemingly unsure whether it's a crinkly comedy, romantic weepie or a family drama, this pedestrian offering from director Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally...) is as ill-fitting as the toupee he wears for his on-screen cameo. Michael Douglas plays a misanthropic estate agent who is looking to cash in on his multimillion family home and retire to a life of luxury, while Diane Keaton - who, like him, has yet to get over the death of her partner - is an amateur lounge singer who lives next door to his unit in a small block of lakeside apartments he also happens to own. Unsurprisingly, the pair are initially at each other's throats, but when Douglas's estranged son (Scott Shepherd) leaves his young daughter (Sterling Jerins) in his care because he is facing prison time, they start to grow closer. The two leads spark off each other nicely, with Keaton also enjoying the chance to showcase her singing talents. However, both are sadly let down by Michael Arbus's predictable script and uninspired direction by the once reliable Reiner.
