Series 1 - 1. British Food

British Food

The mother of all TV food shows was last on our screens in 2001 after nearly 20 years of cooking, slurping and campaigning. It returns tonight with new presenters Michael Roux Jr and Kate Goodman alongside guest chef Tom Kerridge and a more relaxed, convivial approach to the subject.

Goodman is almost as enthusiastic about wine as her predecessor Jilly Goolden was, although she’s more restrained with her descriptions, while Roux presides over the cooking, showing us how to make roast pork with perfect crackling served up with posh gravy (involving calvados and quince jelly).

There’s plenty of joshing and debating as they quaff and scoff around the kitchen table, especially when roving reporter Stefan Gates champions eating bugs as a replacement for meat. None of the trio is convinced.

About this programme

1/6. Michel Roux Jr hosts the revival of the show featuring recipes, tips and discussions on the latest food trends. In the opening edition, he and resident drinks expert Kate Goodman are joined by guest chef Tom Kerridge to create the perfect roast. Restaurateur Oliver Peyton explains why he thinks that British produce needs to be celebrated much more than it is and author and broadcaster Stefan Gates tries to convince people to eat grubs.
