Bank of Dave

Episode 1

Bank of Dave
Radio Times
Review by:
David Butcher

Imagine a short and feisty Peter Kay character who flies his own helicopter and runs Burnley’s biggest minibus dealership. That gives you the flavour of Dave Fishwick, the hero of this fun-but-profound observational doc about Dave’s brilliantly bull-headed attempt to start his own bank.

Dave has little respect for the bailouts-and-bonuses approach of our traditional banks. In fact, he has little respect for anything - solicitors, the FSA, social niceties, you name it. If someone tells him “No”, he just wants it more.

So he drives his Range Rover, sings along to Phil Collins, eats a lot of bananas and gets on with founding his bank, whether he gets a licence or not. And it’s very enjoyable to watch, brilliantly edited and, underneath the quirky music and comedy posturing, about as topical as a documentary can get.

About this programme

Part one of two. Documentary following David Fishwick as he tries to open his own bank in Burnley, Lancashire, and make it profitable in just six months. With the global financial system in crisis and bailed-out bankers in disrepute, the entrepreneur sets out to show he can do a better job than high-street institutions, despite admitting to knowing little about the industry. He intends to give a market-leading interest rate on customers' savings and offer loans as well as business advice to struggling local firms, many of which have been turned down elsewhere.
