Manchester United have reportedly agreed a deal to create a The Crown-style TV show about the football club.

According to The Athletic, the series is in development with production company Lionsgate, and would be a dramatised retelling of the club’s history.

Writer Jed Mercurio, who is best known for British TV hits such as Line of Duty, Bodyguard and Trigger Point, has been in talks regarding the project, according to the publication.

The report adds that an agreement would see Manchester United earn a multi-million pound sum if the show is produced and sold to a broadcaster or streaming platform.

United and Lionsgate have so far not commented on the story.

Manchester United are one of the most decorated clubs in world football, with 20 top-flight league titles, 13 FA Cups, six League Cups, two UEFA Champions Leagues and a European Cup.

In July, The Athletic revealed that United had pulled the plug on secret talks over a Prime Video access-all-areas documentary.

The club’s rivals Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal have featured in All or Nothing documentaries on the streamer in recent years.

And United were set to join the other clubs after reaching a lucrative deal with the streaming giant, but the project was reportedly axed after pushback from then-head coach Ruben Amorim.

Former United player Michael Carrick is currently in charge as caretaker head coach, with the side sitting fifth in the Premier League and out of all cup competitions.

Netflix series The Crown aired six seasons between 2016 and 2023, retelling decades of regal history from Queen Elizabeth II's ascension and the early days of her reign, to the present day.

Meanwhile, two former stars of The Crown, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin, will soon be seen on screen together again in a new six-part adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice on Netflix.
