The plotlines of Grace are often filled with misdirection and red herrings, but in this opener to series six, even the casting plays against expectation. Because here, the prime suspect is Rishi Nair, an actor best known for embodying moral probity in his role as vicar Alphy in Grantchester.

In this twisting tale, though, Nair is Brighton property developer Neel, who’s in a state of distress following the disappearance of his wife Eden (Tamla Kari). A voicemail left on the phone of her best friend suggests that Eden has been taken against her will, while evidence at the couple’s house points to ructions on the property.

Events are complicated by a local crook who has Neel in his sights, but most lovers of whodunnits will find it’s Nair’s presence that generates the most tension. The script may be nudging us to doubt him, yet prior association can’t help but push us the other way. But are we right to be giving Neel the benefit of the doubt?
