David Tennant scooped the Best Actor gong at last night’s WhatsOnStage Theatre Awards for his turn as Richard II on the London stage.
Tennant, who saw off competition from Coriolanus star Tom Hiddleston, may soon need to reinforce his trophy cabinet, as this publicly voted award comes just weeks after he took home the coveted Special Achievement Award at the National Television Awards.
Tennant’s former Doctor Who co-star Billie Piper also went picked up a gong, earning Best Actress for her portrayal of a tabloid news editor in Great Britain, beating off heavyweight competition in the form of Gillian Anderson, Helen McCrory and Imelda Staunton.
Keeping it in the Who family, sometime writer and star Mark Gatiss was named Best Supporting Actor in a Play for his performance as Menenius in Coriolanus, which itself won Best Play Revival and Best Lighting Design, making it the most successful play of the night.
But it was Miss Saigon that was the big winner, taking home an incredible nine awards including Best West End Show. Set during the Vietnam war, the play scored all of the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards for the musical category as well as adding Best Musical Revival, Best Direction for Laurence Connor, Best Choreography and Best Set Design to its haul.
Shakespeare in Love, an adaptation of the 1998 film from Lee Hall, earned Best New Play and add Memphis the Musical to your must-see list, which took home Best New Musical.
