The Lord of the Rings prequel confirms huge star will replace Viggo Mortensen as full cast revealed
Jamie Dornan will be taking over the iconic role of Aragorn – while Leo Woodall has also joined the cast.

Jamie Dornan has been confirmed to play Aragorn in the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hunt for Gollum – with the star set to take over the role that was iconically played by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson's trilogy.
In the film, the character – a human ally of Gandalf – will be going by his alias Strider, with the movie following his quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the location of The One Ring to Sauron.
It had previously been reported that The White Lotus and One Day star Leo Woodall was set to play this role, but it has now been revealed that he will in fact be playing a different character, Halvard.

Dornan and Woodall were officially announced during Warner Bros' presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday (Tuesday 14 April), and join a cast that also included an array of returning stars.
Among them, Elijah Wood will be back as Frodo, Sir Ian McKellen is reprising his role as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis – who will also direct – will once again be playing Gollum in motion capture.
Meanwhile, Lee Pace is back as Thranduil after appearing in all three Hobbit movies and Kate Winslet is joining the cast as the female lead Marigol, though few details about this character have currently been revealed.

The Hunt for Gollum will be set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and focuses on a previously untold story which Serkis previously teased would "be a great marriage of a new story and an intimate story within the lore and world of Middle-earth that we all love."
Dornan – who was recently a guest host on Saturday Night Live UK – has a wealth of major credits to his name including hit TV shows The Fall and The Tourist, and films including Belfast and The Haunting of Venice (as well as the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy).
Meanwhile, after breaking through in The White Lotus and One Day, Woodall has recently been seen in the films Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy and Nuremberg, as well as TV shows Prime Target and Vladimir.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is coming to cinemas in December 2027.
