Summary

Oscar-winning sports drama written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. Rocky Balboa is a down-on-his-luck boxer scraping a living collecting debts for a Philadelphia loan shark. But when heavyweight champion Apollo Creed puts his title up for grabs in a US Bicentennial publicity stunt, Balboa receives an unexpected shot at the big time.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

John Marriott

Dusting down the classic Hollywood story of the little man winning big, this triple-Oscar-winning boxing drama is shot through with genuine impassioned commitment, born of the fact that Sylvester Stallone realised that this was his best hope of stardom. Stallone is highly convincing as mumbling Philadelphia no-hoper Rocky Balboa, who makes the most of his opportunities and ends up having a crack at the loquacious heavyweight champion of the world, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers, by way of Muhammad Ali). Sly also wrote the script and was rewarded with Oscar nominations for both acting and writing, while the film itself beat Taxi Driver, All the President's Men and Network to win best picture.
