The film, which has been written by Peter Gamble and directed by Peter Farrelly, is set for a limited theatrical release in November by Amazon MGM Studios.
The movie dramatises the true story of how Stallone (who is being played by Anthony Ippolito) made 1976's iconic boxing movie Rocky and explores the resistance he faced to the idea of casting himself in the lead role after penning the screenplay.
The new trailer begins with a casting director telling Ippolito's Stallone that he "doesn't have the looks to be a movie star", which leads to him deciding that he's going to write a script for himself to prove everyone wrong.

Stallone isn’t the first acting icon of the 1970s that Ippolito has portrayed, with the star having previously appeared as Al Pacino in the Paramount+ limited series The Offer, which tells the story of how The Godfather was made.
Alongside Ippolito, I Play Rocky also stars Matt Dillon, Anna Sophia Robb, PJ Byrne, Toby Kebbell, Tracy Letts, Jay Duplass and Kiki Seto.

The official synopsis for the movie courtesy of Amazon MGM reads: “The film tells the true story of Sylvester Stallone and his unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky, he was meant to be Rocky Balboa.”
It continues: "Told 'no' at every turn, Sylvester Stallone bets everything on himself, holding the line on playing the lead against seemingly impossible odds. The result is the ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog movie."
