Whisky Galore! director Alexander Mackendrick's only non-comedy during his stay at Ealing is a highly intelligent film with as much to say about the generation gap (albeit in a smaller voice) as such outspoken Hollywood teen pictures as Rebel without a Cause. Mandy Miller gives a performance of remarkable charm and insight as the deaf-mute child whose silent world is opened up by the patient work of committed headmaster Jack Hawkins. An unusually unsympathetic Phyllis Calvert and Terence Morgan do well as Mandy's feuding parents, and there is a standout turn from Godfrey Tearle as the embittered grandfather whose love she craves.
