Summary

Talk about trailing clouds of glory. This gangster drama won a slew of awards and was been lauded across America. It’s a spiritual successor to The Sopranos, created by one of the main writers on that show. The first episode is directed by Martin Scorsese. The lead role — a corrupt county treasurer and crime boss in 1920s Atlantic City — is played by the wonderful Steve Buscemi. What’s not to like?

The first episode is strangely messy. But it soon picks up, Buscemi finds his feet, and you get the thrill of a multi-layered TV epic in the making.

The context for the story is the start of prohibition in 1920 and the opportunities it brings to Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Buscemi), a slippery Mr Big who is part respectable pillar of the community, part gangster. He swiftly moves into bootlegging only for his first big deal to go badly and bloodily wrong. Buscemi’s a joy to watch and the series looks like being a keeper.
