Episode 4: A Vintage Murder

Summary

The launch of the latest sparkling wine by Midsomer Vinae Winery falls flat when critic Nadia Simons gives it a scathing review, then guests sampling the vintage start to collapse. Owner William Carnarvon suspects the Farmers' Wives Association of trying to destroy his business, while his wife Diana frets over her mother Matilda, one of the victims. Pathologist Kate reveals the drink was laced with slug poison, but how is the attack connected to the death of a child in a hit-and-run? Barnaby and Nelson are called in to investigate. Neil Dudgeon and Gwilym Lee star in the mystery drama, with Claire Bloom, Mark Bonnar, Rosie Cavaliero and Ruth Gemmell

Review

Jack Seale

The local vineyard has invited a viperish critic to grace the launch of a new sparkling white, but oh, those grapes are sour. No, really: someone’s poisoned the fizz. So DCI Barnaby flips through a catalogue of grudges in Midsomer Vinae, where everyone is linked to the vineyard or the posh country hotel next door.

Line of Duty star Mark Bonnar is the nervy vintner, with Lloyd Owen as the flash hotelier and Rosie Cavaliero in a slightly thankless role as a woman hamstrung by OCD. It’s a knotty episode, low on flamboyant deaths, although someone does nearly drown in wine. That’s not as fun as it sounds.
