Tarsem Singh's The Fall is one of the most beautiful films ever made. Shot entirely on location across four years, it includes footage from seemingly every landmark on the planet - yet, cheekily, some countries are only on screen for a second (see if you can spot the Eiffel Tower!). Set mainly in a hospital in 1920s Hollywood, it stars Lee Pace as Roy Walker, a stuntman who is recovering from an accident. Child patient Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) demands he tells her a story, and so begins an epic fantasy tale based around a Masked Bandit (also Pace). This story isn't important - frustratingly, it meanders everywhere, catering to a child's surreal logic - but the cinematography is gorgeous, even paying homage to the paintings of Salvador Dalí. The film's heart lies with the relationship between Pace and the 10-year-old Untaru: her natural, ad-libbed performance is devastatingly authentic. As a story, The Fall misses its mark. As a work of art and a portrayal of childhood, it dazzles.
