Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous and influential artists of all time. Sadly, his life was plagued by failure and mental illness, especially towards the end. This mournful biopic focuses on the last few years of his life, as he moves to a small town in the south of France. During this time, Vincent (Willem Dafoe) tries to capture the beauty of nature, painting the world as he sees it. His deteriorating mental state is crucial to the film, which contains many long, wordless sequences following Vincent as he searches for the perfect painting spot. These scenes may cause your attention to wander, but Dafoe gives a captivating performance, conveying the deep sadness that consumes Vincent. By the end of this affecting film, this painter's final years have been brought satisfyingly if tragically to life.
