Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This cleverly constructed B-movie follows the Jaws handbook to the letter, while adding potent scares of its own to fend off being labelled as a lazy Spielberg rip-off. Medical school drop-out Nancy (Blake Lively) is on a surfing journey to her late mother's favourite beach when she's attacked by a great white shark. Jaume Collet-Serra directs with a shrewd sense of tension, finding inspired new ways to terrorise, as Nancy ping-pongs between a rotting whale carcass, a rock island and a buoy to avoid being eaten. The unnervingly pretty cinematography highlights some great images: a corridor of jellyfish, blistering fire coral and, best of all, the shark's ominous silhouette in the waves.
