Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Some people still consider that cartoons are just for kids, and that's despite evidence to the contrary from the Japanese maestros of Studio Ghibli, as well as Hollywood powerhouse Pixar at its best. This "adult" anime from director Makoto Shinkai isn't quite in that league. Nevertheless, it's a warm and very watchable tale of two high-school teens, one a city boy, the other a country girl, who not only find themselves swapping bodies in their dreams, but also linked across time and space to a natural disaster that's in the past for one, and in the future for the other. The complexities of Japanese animation sometimes baffle the western mindset, as you can occasionally lose track of who's doing what to whom and why. Although you need to keep your wits about you here, Your Name is a sharply animated, well-told fantastical tale for tweenagers.
