The X Factor

Series 9 - Episode 20

Radio Times
Review by:
Jane Rackham

By my reckoning we should be down to the final four acts now, although as a result of the surprise departure of Lucy Spraggan in the early rounds plus the tendency of X Factor to move the goalposts occasionally, this may not be the case. And any certainty about which acts will make it to this stage of the competition was blown away when James Arthur and Ella Henderson, who everyone assumed would go head to head in the final, ended up in the bottom two.

Whether this shock will improve viewing and voting figures remains to be seen. But X Factor certainly need to do something spectacular to match last year’s viewing figures. In 2011 the series regularly attracted an audience of nine million — now it’s down to around seven million. And by the end of tomorrow’s results show, those seven million will know who is in with a chance to win.

About this programme

20/21. With Rylan Clark out of the competition, James Arthur, Jahmene Douglas, Union J and Christopher Maloney battle it out in the semi-final, choosing tracks with the themes Songs for You and Songs to Get You into the Final. Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa and Louis Walsh will be looking for nothing less than note-perfect performances from the contestants as they search for a worthy successor to last year's winners Little Mix, but will the pressure to deliver lead to disaster on stage for any of these would-be pop stars? Dermot O'Leary hosts. The results are tomorrow at 8pm.
