I’ve heard (from an X Factor insider who’s not Simon Cowell or a publicity officer) that at the boot camp stage the judges picked the best line-up ever so the signs are good for some terrific live shows.

Before that though we’ve got four weeks of ghastly caterwauling, sob stories, delusion, Jedward-style comic madness, controversy and the occasional bit of brilliant singing. The big news, of course, is that Sharon Osbourne has replaced Tulisa and judging by the clips I’ve seen she is as fabulous and unpredictable as ever. Her co-judges appear to spend most of their time in hysterics or open-mouthed in disbelief at her antics. Plus there’s been a slight tweak to the audition stages so contestants have to audition twice – once in front of Gary, Nicole, Louis and Sharon, and then again in front of an audience.

With 11.5m people watching last year’s final (when James Arthur won), the series shows little sign of flagging. We obviously still enjoy the ride even though we know we’re being shamelessly manipulated. It continues tomorrow.

About this programme

1/22. The talent extravaganza returns with a new look for its 10th series and welcomes Sharon Osbourne back to the judges' desk in her first permanent role on the show since 2007. Replacing Tulisa, she joins Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh (who recently announced this will be his final year) to search for the nation's next singing sensation. In a change to the usual format, The X Factor will be shown twice a week from the very beginning, with Saturdays initially dedicated to the closed-room auditions that fans will remember from the first five years of the show. The most impressive acts then progress to Wembley Arena on Sundays to face their second performances in front of an audience of thousands. Dermot O'Leary hosts.
